Exhibition Design - The Pink Manifesto

July 2018 — Interactive exhibition about the color pink and gender stereotypes, graduation project Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam
Pink is for girls, blue is for boys. The notion of pink and blue is a social construct which is generally viewed as something that "just is". But, is pink—a metaphor for western femininity—truly as innocent as it seems? Together with its audience, 'The Pink Manifesto' researches gender stereotypes and questions our collective connotations with this color.
How can one explain a socially complex subject in a way that is easy to understand to all? Gender is largely perceived as a seemingly distant subject, while in reality—it involves all of us. We deal with this everyday. "The Pink Manifesto" starts this important conversation.
In 4 stages, visitors are merged into a pink world. From the color in our daily lives, to its rich history. What is the meaning? What do we associate it with? Is this association truly relevant? Through fun conversation starters I challenge visitors to be critical and to question society and its (sub)conscious gender roles.
